Background: 2014 Mustang GT w/ 6MT
Just drove to the grocery store felt huge vibrations I think in the drive shaft above 20mph. Nothing below 20, then it increases intensity with increased speed. I thought wheels first because snow/ice could affect balance, but I cleaned them off and no change. There’s no grinding, chirping, smell, or otherwise. It’s just a cyclic vibration felt from the center of the car that is enough to measure on the Richter scale.
I thought the cold might be the issue, but wouldn’t that go away after driving a few minutes? I have to drive 40 minutes to the airport tomorrow, how screwed am I?
EDIT: The answer is not at all. It fixed itself on my drive to a shop. I am embarrassed lol THANK YOU very much for your responses!

did you drive through deep snow? if your’re lucky you might have ice on the driveshaft...

Yeah I did actually but briefly. Wouldn’t that warm up and come off though?

make sure no limps from the last crowd you ran over are stuck there.
maybe the U joint got some frozen stuff in it

Pop a weight off the driveshaft (or dent, even) on some packed ice?
I’d try to get on a lift/ramps and take a look if at all possible.

depends, that stuff can be tenacious... but yeah, it should eventually let go.

I just looked under, and while I can’t see everything there is a bunch of solid ice that my scraper can’t dislodge. I’ve causing this seems most plausible.
Out of curiosity though, what should I look out for to determine if it’s something more dangerous? The car doesn’t feel unsafe to drive but vibrations are scary none the less.

No just some left over teeth and hair but I cleaned that off.

I guess I’d have to find a shop with some available time. Thanks for the advice on what to look for.

if you get it warmed up and thawed, or on a lift to make sure that’s the best bet... Rust and Dust has a point, it COULD be you knocked a weight off the driveshaft on some ice, but It’s probably more likely you hve ice in a u-joint or frozen directly onto the shaft. Melting it out is gonna be the quickest way to find out. If you can...

If it ends up being packed ice somewhere, a hair dryer and extension cords can help bail you out.
